Telkom University Advances Energy Efficiency in Campus Buildings Through the Digital Green Campus Masterplan

Keyword: EnergyEfficiency, GreenBuilding, Sustainability

Telkom University continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability by enhancing energy efficiency across its campus facilities, in alignment with the Digital Green Campus Masterplan. This initiative represents the university’s strategic effort to create an environmentally responsible, energy-conscious academic environment that integrates innovation and sustainability into every aspect of campus life.

Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Initiatives

As part of this initiative, Telkom University has launched an extensive energy efficiency program that focuses on both preventive measures and awareness-building within the academic community. The program emphasizes the importance of responsible energy use and aims to cultivate behavioral change among students, staff, and faculty members.

Through continuous campaigns and facility upgrades, the university ensures that energy-saving practices become part of the daily campus routine, fostering a culture of sustainability throughout the institution.

The implementation of energy efficiency within Telkom University buildings involves a comprehensive set of improvements. Conventional lighting has been replaced with LED systems, new buildings are equipped with automatic lighting controls, and classroom technology has been upgraded from traditional projectors to LED display screens.

To optimize air conditioning systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and temperature sensors are used to automatically adjust cooling performance, reducing unnecessary power consumption. These measures collectively contribute to significant reductions in energy use across the university.

Intelligent Energy Management and Renewable Power Systems

A major technological advancement in Telkom University’s sustainability initiatives is the Intelligent Energy Management System (IEMS), developed by Dr. Muhammad Ary Murti from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The IEMS utilizes IoT (Internet of Things) technology to monitor and analyze electricity consumption in real time, enabling precise energy control and data-driven decision-making for energy efficiency.

Telkom University also operates a Rooftop Solar Power Plant (PLTS) on Building P, which supplies renewable electricity to support campus operations. In addition, the university continues to develop Wind Power (PLTB) and Biogas Power (PLTBiogas) systems as part of its broader transition toward renewable energy sources and carbon emission reduction.

The Gedung Kuliah Utama (GKU) — Telkom University’s Main Lecture Hall — embodies the principles of green building design, featuring natural lighting and ventilation that minimize energy usage while maintaining comfort and functionality for all users. This design reflects Telkom University’s commitment to integrating eco-efficient architecture with advanced energy technologies.

Sustainable Campus Infrastructure

Spanning more than 50 hectares, the Telkom University campus accommodates a wide range of facilities, including 18 dormitory buildings (10 for male students and 8 for female students), as well as academic and administrative facilities such as Grha Wiyata Cacuk Sudarijanto A & B, Marore, Marampit, Mantewaru, Kawalusu, Intata, and Sebatik Buildings, the Syamsul Ulum Mosque, and the Telkom University Landmark Tower (TULT). Each of these facilities has undergone or is undergoing energy efficiency upgrades that align with the Digital Green Campus standards, ensuring the consistent integration of sustainability principles across the entire campus.

Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

Through the integration of IoT-based energy management, renewable energy systems, and green architectural design, Telkom University reinforces its position as a pioneer of sustainability and technological innovation in higher education. These efforts directly contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action) showcasing Telkom University’s leadership in environmental responsibility and smart campus transformation.

Conclusion

By combining technology, innovation, and environmental awareness, Telkom University exemplifies how a modern academic institution can lead the transition toward a smart, digital, and eco-friendly future. Through the Intelligent Energy Management System, the deployment of renewable energy facilities, and the application of green building principles such as those seen in the Gedung Kuliah Utama (Main Lecture Hall), the university continues to advance as a model for sustainable campus development and environmental stewardship in Indonesia.
