Telkom University Identifies and Reduces Energy Waste to Strengthen Efficiency and Sustainability

Telkom University continues to strengthen its commitment to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability through a series of initiatives aimed at identifying and minimizing energy waste. These efforts combine research, technological innovation, and public education, representing the university’s strong commitment to advancing sustainable energy management and fostering responsible resource utilization.

Energy Wastage Identification and Review

Telkom University regularly conducts comprehensive energy audits and reviews to identify areas of high electricity consumption and potential energy loss across campus facilities.
Through systematic evaluations, the university analyzes consumption patterns in classrooms, laboratories, administrative buildings, and public spaces to detect inefficiencies.

The audits are supported by the Intelligent Energy Management System (IEMS) — an IoT-based innovation developed by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The IEMS enables real-time monitoring and optimization of electricity use, automatically regulating lighting, air conditioning, and electrical systems to achieve maximum efficiency.

Audit Results:
Based on the findings, several improvement measures were implemented, including upgrading lighting to LED, optimizing HVAC performance, and installing renewable energy systems.
The audit program also identified opportunities for off-campus application of green technologies, including:

• Household organic waste-to-biogas conversion with IoT integration in Lebaksiu Kidul Village and Central Java
• Rooftop Solar Power (PLTS) installation in several high schools in Central Papua, fostering renewable energy literacy and empowering local communities.

These results demonstrate how Telkom University transforms research insights into real-world energy solutions that benefit both the campus and society.

Research and Technology-Based Solutions

In alignment with its vision of becoming a Green and Smart Campus, Telkom University integrates data-driven energy management with academic research. Students and faculty collaborate on projects focusing on IoT-based energy monitoring, smart control systems, and renewable power generation, such as Rooftop Solar Power (PLTS), Wind Energy (PLTB), and Biogas Energy (PLTBiogas). These research-based solutions not only reduce carbon emissions but also provide practical learning experiences for students, allowing them to apply scientific knowledge to real environmental challenges.

Community Service and Education Programs

Beyond the campus, Telkom University extends its sustainability mission through Community Service Programs (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat) led by lecturers and students. These initiatives include public awareness campaigns, energy efficiency workshops, and training sessions that encourage local communities to adopt sustainable energy practices in homes and small businesses.
