Telkom University Implements Comprehensive Waste Tracking and Recycling System

Telkom University continues to strengthen its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production through the implementation of an integrated waste management and tracking system across its campus. This initiative reflects the university’s dedication to promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable resource utilization through measurable and innovative actions.

One of the primary focuses of this program is the management of organic and inorganic waste within the university area. Leaf waste collected from the campus environment is converted into green compost fertilizer, supporting the development of eco-friendly landscapes within Telkom University. In 2024 alone, the university successfully processed 50,295 kilograms of leaf waste, transforming it entirely into compost that can be reused for campus greenery and community environmental programs.

Meanwhile, inorganic waste is managed using an incinerator machine, ensuring safe and efficient processing. The combustion residue from the incinerator is further treated and creatively repurposed into flower pots, contributing to the circular economy concept by turning waste materials into useful campus products.

To ensure accurate measurement and transparency, Telkom University utilizes the Smash-Pay application, a digital platform that enables real-time monitoring of waste generation and recycling. Through this system, the university can track waste volumes, optimize recycling strategies, and assess the impact of its sustainability initiatives over time.

By implementing a structured waste tracking and recycling mechanism, Telkom University not only minimizes its environmental footprint but also exemplifies how academic institutions can lead by example in achieving responsible consumption and production. The university remains committed to enhancing its sustainability practices, ensuring a cleaner, greener, and more circular campus ecosystem.
