Telkom University Report On Progress of SDGs 5. Gender Equality

Telkom University actively promotes gender quality for Indonesian women through diverse programs, such as creativity encouragement through their works, MSME’s management skills improvement proper innovation creation in improving the household economy, and digital literacy skills. Telkom University always strives to improve the standard of living through educational services with equal principles for all. This is proven by the number of new first-generation students of 10,864 out of a total of 16,230 students in the 2023 academic year (66.94%). Of the total 16,230, 6,521 were women (40.18%), and 4,190 first generation girls were studying (64.25% of the total female students).

A team of lecturers from Telkom University organized a collaboration to carry out one of the university’s duties, namely Community Service (PKM). This internal collaboration involved lecturers from the Undergraduate Communication Studies Program of the Faculty of Communication and Business, and the Graduate Visual Communication Design Program of the Faculty of Creative Industries. This community service project was carried out in partnership with the Indonesian Teacher School (SGI) with the agenda 'Creating Educational Content for an Online Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)', held online on January 17, 2023. The PKM activity consisted of three internal teams, each led by Alila Pramiyanti, Ph.D., Dr. Iis Kurnia, and Dr. Ira Wirasari. According to Alila, this initiative was undertaken to launch an online campaign as a form of sexual education and digital literacy to prevent GBV. Alila explained that the Telkom University PKM team initially distributed surveys to teachers to map out issues related to GBV that students often face. The survey results highlighted several issues frequently encountered by teachers, such as sexting, cyberstalking, and malicious distribution.

In designing the content for the anti-GBV campaign, the collaborative team from both study programs worked together to craft messages and create animated characters to be the main figures of this campaign. These animated characters represent the relationship between parents (father and mother) and children (both boys and girls), based on the premise that teenagers are highly vulnerable to becoming victims of GBV and still need parental guidance, particularly from their parents, to navigate their social lives.

This PKM activity also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerning Gender Equality, and in the future, it is expected to become a continuous effort to promote the anti-GBV campaign content in order to create a well-informed society. In terms of publications, in 2023, we released a total of 11 research publications in accredited journals and conferences related to SDG 5.
