In line with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, Telkom University continues to advance its efforts in addressing the global climate crisis through collaborative initiatives, research, and long-term strategic planning. The university actively promotes the development and implementation of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan that is shared with local governments and community groups to strengthen collective awareness and mitigation efforts.
One of the key initiatives under this commitment is the carbon stock assessment conducted by Telkom University across ten regencies and cities in four provinces of Indonesia between March and April 2024. The program, carried out in collaboration with PT Telkom Indonesia, aims to evaluate the company’s contribution to maintaining natural carbon balance through sustainable business practices.
Head of the SDGs Center Telkom University, Runik Machfiroh, explained that the partnership serves as a strategic effort to measure, monitor, and enhance understanding of carbon storage in various ecosystems.
“With a better understanding of carbon stock, we can design more effective strategies to minimize carbon footprints and strengthen our mitigation actions,” she stated on Wednesday (May 29, 2024).
The research team focused on its studies across Java Island, covering multiple types of ecosystems, from forests to mangrove areas, representing diverse environmental conditions and carbon storage capacities. The findings are expected to provide essential data for formulating evidence-based strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote ecosystem restoration.
The program involves lecturers, students, and staff, reflecting Telkom University’s inclusive approach to sustainability education and climate awareness. By engaging multiple stakeholders, the university ensures that the implementation of its climate initiatives creates both academic and social impact.
In addition to its collaboration with PT Telkom Indonesia, Telkom University has also developed a climate action plan in partnership with several international institutions, including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Australia through the KONEKSI program. This joint effort focuses on addressing the impacts of rising sea levels caused by climate change and aims to provide innovative and locally adapted solutions.
These ongoing initiatives demonstrate Telkom University’s holistic approach to climate action: combining research, education, collaboration, and community engagement. Moving forward, the university remains dedicated to strengthening its climate strategy, supporting policy development, and contributing to a sustainable and resilient future for Indonesia and beyond.
