Telkom University Strengthens Its Commitment to Carbon Management and Green Mobility

Technological Innovation and Environmental Infrastructure

As part of its carbon and environmental management program, Telkom University has introduced several innovative technologies, including the Indoor Air Quality Monitoring System (IAQMS), which monitors air quality levels in real time to ensure a healthy and comfortable learning environment.

The university also promotes sustainability through tree planting programs within the campus area, contributing to carbon absorption and urban greening efforts. Furthermore, the university has implemented energy-saving practices across its buildings — such as reminders to switch off electricity when not in use, and the exclusive use of LED lighting systems that enhance energy efficiency while reducing waste.

Additionally, battery waste and electronic waste management systems have been established to ensure that used LED components and other electronic materials are safely processed and recycled in accordance with environmental standards.

Green Mobility and Carbon Emission Reduction Policies

In line with its sustainability roadmap, Telkom University has implemented various green mobility initiatives to reduce emissions from transportation. The campus operates electric operational vehicles (EVs), electric bicycles, and provides TUC electric shuttles for mobility within the campus. The university has also introduced integrated parking areas equipped with Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) to support the transition to cleaner transportation.

To minimize carbon emissions, Telkom University has declared certain areas as vehicle-free zones, ensuring a cleaner and quieter campus environment. Every Friday, from 06:00 to 18:00, motorized vehicles are prohibited from entering the Telkom University campus area, encouraging the academic community to walk or use bicycles.

Carbon Management and Energy Efficiency

Telkom University has begun implementing a structured carbon management and reduction policy covering both operational and behavioral aspects. Some of the initiatives include:

  • Operating air conditioning systems using PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), enabling efficient and automated energy use;
  • Designing buildings with natural air circulation, reducing the need for AC in certain rooms; and
  • Maximizing the use of natural sunlight as a primary source of illumination during the day.

The university also issued a Circular on Carbon and Emission Reduction Policies, which includes:

  1. Parking regulations — all two-wheeled motorized vehicles are parked at the outer edges of the campus area;
  2. Encouragement for new students not to use private vehicles, as dormitories are located near academic buildings; and
  3. Appeals to the academic community to use bicycles or electric vehicles for activities within the campus.

Waste and Resource Management

Supporting its carbon reduction goals, Telkom University manages solid and liquid waste through dedicated facilities that ensure proper treatment and minimize environmental impact. These initiatives align with the university’s integrated sustainability policy, combining waste management, energy optimization, and carbon control into a single framework.

Through these continuous and holistic efforts, Telkom University reinforces its position as a leading green campus in Indonesia, setting an example of how higher education institutions can integrate technology, policy, and community participation to achieve long-term environmental sustainability.
