In response to the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters, Telkom University has developed a series of IoT-based innovations that enhance environmental monitoring and disaster preparedness. Among these are systems for mangrove and soil moisture monitoring, which help detect changes in coastal and agricultural ecosystems, and an emergency directional guidance application designed to guide people to safe evacuation routes during disasters. Additionally, the university conducts carbon footprint assessments to support evidence-based policymaking in local climate governance.
One of the university’s flagship innovations is PATRIOT-Net (Platform for Advanced Technology in Resilience and IoT Networking), a national early warning and recovery system integrated with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). PATRIOT-Net utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) technology for real-time monitoring of floods, landslides, and earthquakes, enabling rapid data transmission and analysis to support emergency response. The system is also equipped with Mobile Cognitive Radio Base Stations, providing backup communication during infrastructure failures, ensuring that information flow remains uninterrupted in crisis situations.
Beyond national initiatives, Telkom University extends its innovation globally through collaboration with the University of Wollongong and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) under the KONEKSI program. This international partnership focuses on the development of Tide Eye and Flood Eye, advanced flood prediction systems implemented in Central Java. These tools combine satellite data, IoT sensors, and predictive analytics to provide accurate early warnings and improve disaster preparedness at the community level.
Through these collaborative efforts, Telkom University reinforces its role as a leader in data-driven climate resilience and technological adaptation. By integrating research, innovation, and partnerships, the university not only enhances national disaster risk management capacity but also contributes to building a more resilient and sustainable future for Indonesia and beyond.
